SET DRESSING - AUDITION ROOM TO BAKERY

  • Location

Due to COVID-19 restrictions in cafés, the Showrunner was unable to secure an actual cafe as a location. Thus, we were limited to using the audition room in Marion Knott Studios (Dodge College of Film and Media Arts) as a bakery.

  • Process

Due to building policy, we were unable to move furniture out of the room. Thus, I raised the original conference table using apple boxes and wrapped it in marble removable wallpaper. I surrounded it with cardboard and covered the border with wood-texture wallpaper to turn it into a counter.

  • Final Set

After designing the bakery logo, I utilized shelving and baked goods to dress the space, creating the scene of a bakery. One of the major challenges we had was the wall material: cloth. This led to some crumpling of the wallpaper when I applied the logo, and I will be making improvements in future projects.

Building My Set Pieces

In high school, I had the opportunity to work with maker-space tools. Since a large-scaled neon store sign would normally cost >450 dollars custom-made online, I built it myself. The sign ended up costing around 80 dollars in materials and took around 7 hours to make.

SET DRESSING - DANCE STUDIO TO SPIRITUAL SHOP

  • Location

The shooting location for the spiritual shop was originally a dance supply store with connected studios. My biggest challenges were the large shelf spaces and the two mirrors in front and behind the check-out counter.

  • Process

I covered the mirror behind the counter with black cloth, hanging beads, and a shelf. Then, I covered the DSU letters with a neon “Dusk Stones” sign to bring the room’s color palette to a warmer tone, more similar to the mood boards.

  • Final Set

Finally, I used potion bottles, lights, candles, crystals, dreamcatchers, and many other detailed pieces to fill the space, keeping the wooden, blue, and maroon color palette we intended for this scene.
